Hemp House Publications

The Hemp House is a project to showcase industrial hemp and its potential as an eco-construction material. The house, recently completed in Noordhoek, Cape Town, uses hempcrete, hemp insulation, and hemp particle board. The hemp aspect of the building, which accounts for up to 50% of the walls, was grown in 4-5 months without the need for agro-chemicals, and results in a breathable, natural, sustainable and carbon-friendly building.

Hemp is fast being recognised as the “better than zero carbon” building method. We currently have commercial trials ongoing in South Africa for the farming and emergence of a locally grown hemp industry. We hope that by showcasing the Hemp House we can help push the industry into the mainstream, increasing awareness around industrial hemp and the multitude of products that can be made from it. Hemp is a part of a move back towards a healthy, green planet, and we are proud to be part of that.

The hemp house has been a collaboration since its inception, with the original designs being made by Wolf of Wolf &Wolf and Michael Orchard of New Earth Architecture. Hemporium worked closely with Perfect Places in the importation of the hemp materials and the construction of the hemp house. In addition we worked with several partner companies who supplied eco-friendly fixtures and fittings in order to keep the footprint of the house as small as possible.
